Urgent Care team & Osteoporosis Screening

The Urgent Care Team have informed that they will do FRAX scores on patient who have fallen. The message is as follows:

Gateshead Urgent Care Team has recognised that as part of their assessment of patients who have fallen, they could include osteoporosis risk.

As from April 2012 osteoporosis has been included in the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) giving GP practices incentives for diagnosing and treating osteoporosis in their patients.

The Urgent Care Team will use the FRAX tool for this and if they do identify anyone at risk will put this on the concerns of their discharge letter for the GPs information.

The Urgent Care Team will not be able to refer patient for DXA scans or commence on any treatment. This will be for preventative measures only.

The Urgent Care Team will commence to include this risk assessment in the new year as the team need to have teaching in using the FRAX tool.
